President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo has condemned a bomb attack of a Catholic church in the city of Makassar on Palm Sunday.
He described the attack as a “terror and radicalist”.
“I call on everyone to fight against terror and radicalism, which go against religious values,” the president stated.
Indonesia’s Minister for Religious Affairs, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas called on the police to security measures at places of worship.
The explosion occurred at about 10:30 local time (03:30 GMT) at the end of a religious service for Palm Sunday.
National Police spokesman Argo Yuwono recounted that “there were two people riding on a motorbike when the explosion happened at the main gate of the church – the perpetrators were trying to enter the compound.”
Police said two individuals suspected to be the bombers have died as a destroyed motorbike and body parts were found at the scene.
So far 19 persons are reportedly wounded.
Pope Francis offered a prayer for the victims of the attack during a Palm Sunday mass at the Vatican, Italy.
