Deal with death threats, attacks against journalists – Oppong Nkrumah to security agencies

Ghana’s Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has asked the security agencies to get to the bottom of attacks and threats against journalists.

According to him, the police and all relevant stakeholders must employ all “legitimate means at their disposal to unmask the identities of the culprits – whatever their motives – and arrest and prosecute them with speed.”

His comments follow revelations that the home of broadcast Journalist with Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN) and morning show host of Accra-based Angel FM, Captain Godsbrain Smart, was broken into on Sunday dawn.

Freelance journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, also received a death threat after he had published an article on the outcome of the 2020 general elections.

The supposed unhappy party fanatic who sent the threat via email told him [Manasseh Azure] to always remember his colleagues’ death when he takes his pen to write an an article.

Manasseh’s article was titled “ERRORtoral Commission and Akufo-Addo’s coup d’etat.”

Head of Programs at the Despite Media Group, Afia Pokua, known popularly as Vim Lady, has received numerous threats as well.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah however noted that “Ghana’s enviable reputation as a protector of journalists’ rights and freedoms must be preserved.”

“Manasseh Awuni, Captain Smart, Afia Pokua et al, my thoughts are with you,” his Monday tweet ended.
