“Awurade Nyankopon!” Bawumia reacts to NDC’s claim of starting Free SHS

Vice President and running mate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed his utter shock and dismay at the claim by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that it started the Free Senior High School policy in 2015.

Flagbearer of the NDC, John Mahama, in a three–day campaign tour of the Upper West Region said the erstwhile NDC administration “started the programme [Free SHS] and the NPP came to continue it”.

The former President however criticized the NPP for poorly implementing the policy leading to the introduction of the double track system.

But speaking at the Cedi Conference Hall, University of Ghana, at the 12th Nation Building Updates, Vice President Dr. Bawumia said the NDC’s claims were untenable.

“The NDC opposed and bastardized the free SHS policy proposed by Nana Akufo-Addo. They said it was a hoax. They said it was a 419 promise. They said if he had GHC 2 billion they would not spend it on free SHS. They said free SHS would collapse the education system. They went on demonstrations against the Free SHS.

“They even went to the Supreme Court to stop the implementation of Free SHS. They run over 40 adverts against Free SHS. But the study and visionary Nana Akufo-Addo stuck to his guns because he knew what was good for this country and has successfully implemented the Free SHS policy.

“But what do we hear today? Today, the NDC and their Flagbearer is saying; is looking us straight in the eyes and saying that they started Free SHS…Awurade Nyankopon!”he exclaimed.

Dr. Bawumia further said the prediction of doom for the Free SHS policy by the NDC did not materialize, adding that “the recent results of the first batch of free SHS graduates has shown that quality has not been compromised”.
