Shop closures: Alan Kyerematen insists Ghana government is not targeting Nigerians

Ghana’s Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has reiterated government’s resolve to deal with an ensuing impasse between Ghanaian and Nigerian traders in the West African country.

According to Mr Kyerematen, Ghana’s crackdown on non-Ghanaians doing illegal retailing is not targeted at Nigerians specifically.

“It’s not a fight against Nigerians”, Mr Prince Boateng, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Trade and Industry said on behalf of the sector Minister in an interview with Accra FM.

When asked about the state of the problem, Mr Boateng said, “It is just that the majority of the non-Ghanaians doing illegal retailing are Nigerians, that is why it appears to our fellow Nigerians that Ghana is against them but that is not the case”.

A number of foreign retail shop owners in Ghana’s national capital have accused the Ghanaian authorities of not treating them fairly as far as the closure of their retail shops is concerned.
